February 2021: Spring bulbs, fresh foliage and a new bin store

Here is a video update of the developments in the garden in February.

I forgot to mention in the video that we had a real cold snap at the beginning of the month and both the Luma apiculata and the tree anenomeย  (Carpenteria californica) are now looking rather sad. Hopefully they’ll survive; it would be such a shame if they didn’t as we planted them 3 years ago and have started to look good.

If anyone has any ideas of what else I could plant into the living roof of the bin store just post a comment below – I would be interested to hear them ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Sedums are a good bet for your bin store lid Guy, but I think thyme is a great idea xxx

    1. I was thinking Sedums could be great, although I don’t often like the flower colours x

  2. Hi Guy. Great to see your lovely blogs. The wheelie bin store with live roof is such a good idea, I may have to pinch it. I would have thought sedums were the safest option but the smell of thyme as you go past the store would be much more of a pleasure. Saxifrage or oregano are another couple of suggestions.
I don’t think the excitement of watching spring bulbs coming up every year ever diminishes. Even more so in this present time. Keep up the good work, Guy.

    1. Thanks Laura! And thanks for taking the time to message ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll look up those herbs it could be good to have a range of plants as it is actually quite a big planting area. Take care, Guy x

  3. How about a herb garden on the bin store roof..? Nice and handy for the chef..?
The sound of running water in the garden is a real plus, I think. Very calming to sit and listen to. Does Morris dig anything up or is he highly trained not to? ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. He doesn’t dig anything up…but he does want to put everything in his mouth. We are working in it! Yes, herbs could be a good idea, although we do have a raised bed for them already. I love having the ponds and they’re great for the birds too ๐Ÿ™‚
