March 2019: Spring in the garden

It was exciting this March to see some of the early flowering plants that we positioned last year burst into flower; these included the euphorbia, clematis, and some of the bulbs like the daffodil ‘Thalia‘; this multi-headed classic variety are pure white and really stand out against the bark mulch. We will definitely be planting more of these bulbs in

January 2019: New life in the garden

I’m going to start this post with a note: if you’re reading this on your phone, hold it landscape and the format looks how it should do! As per one of my New Year’s resolutions to be more observant of how the garden develops over the seasons, I’ve identified some of the coppice trees that line the bank of our

December 2018: First frosts, winter walks and reflections on on a year in the garden

I took some annual leave in the run up to Christmas and made a conscious effort to not become totally sedentary – I recently got a fitness watch so wanted to see if I could maintain some semblance of fitness. I decided that walking would be our activity of choice and we went on quite a few decent ambles in

November 2018: Installing a nest box and clearing the garden for winter

Since watching a programme on this garden a few years ago we’ve always wanted to go – it’s an incredible place with so many garden rooms crammed into a relatively small place.

May 2018: Extending the mixed border, new beds and planting climbers

One of the first things we did this month was visit ‘Isabella Plantation‘ in Richmond Park. I highly recommend this place – its totally magical. It feels like a secluded woodland and is dominated by huge rhododendrons and Azaleas – It’s so colourful at this time of year. My favourite part was the stream that runs through it, it’s bordered

March 2018: We have compost!

Yes thats right… we’ve actually made our own homegrown compost from scratch and it looks alright…if a little lumpy! Back in June 2017 my trusty helper Luke made our composting station. We did some research in to the magical formula necessary for successful composting (which requires a delicate balance of nitrogen: green stuff  and carbon: brown stuff). Fast forward 10 months
